Our club today

A health and fitness club unlike any other in Salt Lake City

Tradition and history have made this club an important part of the local and national tennis community, and you can feel it walking the halls or talking to any long-standing member. Generations of families have grown up here — learning to swim, learning to play, and competing at the highest level with family and friends.

We’ve built on that with a new two-storey fitness facility, resurfaced courts, LED lighting, state-of-the-art locker rooms with sauna and steam, and a remodelled cafe. Future plans include an enclosure over the pool so it can be used year round, and a large hot tub.

Whether you’re a casual tennis player, a fanatic weight lifter, want to shoot some hoops, work on your soccer game, or just hang out at the pool with your kids — it’s all here.

Our history

A hundred years of Utah tennis

The Salt Lake Tennis Club has a storied past — not just in Utah tennis, but nationally. We hosted the US National Clay Court Championships in the 1940s. Tony Trabert, Andre Agassi, Stan Smith, Arthur Ashe and Jim Osbourne all competed here. When the indoor courts went up, the club became home to the Western Collegiate Hardcourt Championships in the 1960s.

1912 – 1963

Three homes

The club’s first location was the Victory Park courts on 10th East. In the 1930s it moved to 9th East, next to the Forest Dale Golf Course. In 1963 it moved to its current home on 17th East near Sugar House Park and was renamed the Salt Lake Swimming and Tennis Club.
1912 – 2013

Owned by the members — and nearly lost

For its first 101 years the club was owned by its members. As times changed it ran into financial difficulty, and by 2013 it faced the real possibility of being taken over by the bank and sold for an alternate use.
Fall 2013

A familiar name steps in

After extended conversations with the board and membership, Laury Hammel bought the club to keep this community institution alive — exactly 101 years after it was founded. He then began investing significant capital in the facility, the team and the programs.
January 1, 2017

A new name, on purpose

The management team spent months on the name. They kept the 105-year-old Salt Lake Tennis Club in place, and added ‘Health’ because it covers everything the club now offers — and because it describes the essence of our mission as a business.

What has changed since 2013

  • A two-storey fitness facility built from scratch — weights, classes, yoga, basketball, turf, cardio, cycling, Pilates and TRX
  • Some of the best fitness coaches and personal trainers in the area hired to run it
  • A team of highly accomplished tennis professionals assembled and trained
  • All indoor and outdoor courts resurfaced, with root damage on courts 17 and 18 levelled
  • A court sweeper that actually works — the courts are cleaner than they have ever been
  • Every indoor court re-lit with LEDs that will last twenty years or more
  • PlaySight installed — shot speed, spin and match statistics on your phone or computer
  • Swim team and swim lessons transformed under Julie Tate
  • New software and a check-in system that makes everything easier for everyone

Laury Hammel

Tennis is in Laury’s blood. His father Lee managed this club through the 1950s and 60s — membership grew and the first pool was built on his watch. Laury and his siblings grew up here, spending summers on these courts and learning to compete. When the club moved to 1700 East, Laury was its first janitor, and he worked here until he graduated from the U in 1971.

Both his parents, Lee and Ruby, were lifelong tennis coaches and players and are both in the Utah Tennis Hall of Fame. In 2000 the Hammel family — including his sister Carolee and brother Brad — were named the USTA National Tennis Family of the Year.

On court

A lifelong competitor

Ranked as high as #3 in the Intermountain as a junior, and as an adult #1 in Men’s Open Doubles in Utah and #2 in the Intermountain. He has been ranked #1 in several senior age divisions in New England and in the national top twenty several times — and he’s still working on his game, aiming for the national top ten.
The Stan Smith match

6–4, 6–4

His finest competitive moment came as a freshman at the U, playing college junior Stan Smith — then the number one college player in the nation — and losing a hotly contested match by that score. His sister Carolee is currently ranked #7 in the nation in Women’s 65 Singles.
In business

The Longfellow Clubs

He moved to Boston in 1972 and started a tennis business that grew into New England’s largest tennis company — and from the beginning, its most successful junior program. Known nationally for camps that teach thousands of children tennis while helping them reach their full potential on and off the court.
Laury is a member of the New England Tennis Hall of Fame and has coached more New England #1 players than any coach in New England. He still loves to teach, still coaches nationally ranked players, and is thrilled with the quality of this club’s tennis professionals, the excellence of its programs, and the extraordinary success of our young junior athletes.
